YIELD OF WHEAT.

AN OFFICIAL’S PREDICTION

AVERAGE ABORT 30 BUSHELS. (.Special to the “Guardian.”) CHRISTCHURCH, Phis Day. An average yield of about 30 bush els of wheal an aero may be expected from crops: jn Canterbury this season, according to informal ion given by the Fields Superintendent of the 'Department of'Agriculture! (Mr R. McGilli May) yesterday. Mr McGillivray, who had just returned from, n four of the province, said that about 30 bushels an aero might he expected as the average wheat yield from crops he had seen in elverv district from North Cans

terliurv to Waimato. There were some poor crops, hut there wove some exceptionally good ones, especially among those early sown on the. heavier types of soil. Some spring-sown crops looked ratin',- sick, hut in places a good rain would assist them to give a reasonable yield. In all districts wheat was coming on very last. South Canterbury crops seemed to lie about as far advanced as those Tii North Canterbury. The amount of disease in ibis' season's crops did not seem to bo great. There was some take-all and some whitehead.

Cenerally. Mr MeCJillivrny thought that tile yield would be above tbo expectations of farmers because the tillering of the plants bad been good. Me bad seen few light crops, but there were some oil light land that had been brought on prematurely, and therefore could not he expected to yield good quality grain.
