GOLD DREDGE SINKS.
AN UNEXPLAINED ACCIDENT. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, January 12. The Murchison Mataki Junction dredge at Murchison, sank at midnight last night in 18 loot -of water. A change of shift was taking place when a list to starboard was noticed. Investigation revealed that water was quickly rising in the, compartments amidships. Bilge pumps were set ready for action, hut the inrush of water caused the ship to sink rapidly, forcing the crew to leave hurriedly for safety. An effort was also made to draw the dredge to the hank, hut time did not permit this. The cause of the accident is not known, and it is not yet possible to investigate.
