THE DUTCH OFFENDED.
REJECTION OF PEACE OFFER. groundless reasons given. LONDON, November 16. The Dutch are most offended at Germany’t curt of the offer of mediation. It is pointed out that a personal message from the Queen at least merited a similar reply from the head of* the German State. Moreover, Herr von Ribbentrop’s reasons for rejection are' regarded as groundless. As the Dutch Foreign Office has already declared in a statement, the British ,and French replies appeared to leave the door open. It seems clear that Herr Hitler doubted whether the German people! would tolerate the downright rejection of mediation. Therefore Herr Hitler left to Herr von Ribbentrop the task of pretending that the British and French replies made further effort useless. The Nazi press significantly described the Allies’ replies as “a new declaration of war.’’ The Stockholm and Swedish newspapers, however, consider that Germany has not entirely rejected the Belgian and Dutch good offices, and possibly it hopes to employ them later.
