INCREASE GRANTED.

ALLOWANCES FOR CHILDREN. * THE THREE SERVICES. (Received This Day, 10.5 a.m.) LONDON, November 14. The Secretary of State for War (Mr Horc-Belislia) announced in the House of Commons the Government’s decision to increase the'allowances for the children of sailors, soldiers and airmen, as well as the limits of special allowances in cases of hardship. The rates are being raised from 3s to 4s a week for the second child,, and from 2s to -3s for each subsequent child. On the present figures the changes are expected .to add some £2,000,000 to the existing annual expenditure on about £10,000,000 on children’s allowances in the three defence services. The concession has been made in response to representations in recent debates in the House of Commons that hardship was being experienced by the families of men in the three services, especially where rents are high.—British Official Wireless.
