THE MEAT MARKETS.
GOVERNMENT SHIPMENTS. (per Press Association). . WELLINGTON, August 31. When addressing delegates at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board to-day, the chairman (Mr T. A. Duncan) said that a cable message had been received from Singapore stating that ewe mutton was absolutely unsaleable. It was very uitfortunate, because it did not look as if it were possible for New Zealand producers to get any sale for their produces in the East, with the exception of some special small lots. Mr Duncan’s remarks were made after he had dealt witli a trial shipment the board had sent to Canada. “Encouraged by the success of last year’s experimental shipment of lambs to Eastern Canada,” he said, “and having in mind the urgent need to find an outlet for our mutton and lamb in new markets, the board this year had sent four shipments of mutton and lamb to Toronto and Montreal. The quantity consigned this year was almost double last year’s initial venture, and although it was still relatively small in volume it was a beginning. If only a regular trade could be built up with Canada it would be of great benefit to New Zealand, particularly at present, when New Zealand producers are faced with restriction in their principal market, the United Kingdom.”
