THE MEDICAL BENEFITS SCHEME
DOCTORS STILL OPPOSING IT. )
(Per Press Association). AVELLINGTON, July 5. Tho following statement was made to-night by Dr. J. P. S. Jamieson (chairman of the National Health .Insurance Committee of the New Zealand branch of the British Medical Association) after a meeting of the Council of the branch to-day:— “The Council reaffirmed that the atttitude of the profession in regard to the Government’s proposals is un-> changed in spite of an unauthorised statement to the contrary. Certain proposals were discussed by the Council and the executive of the Association was authorised to interview the Minister and discuss the proposals in detail. There were matters in the proposals* which required further discussion, and while this is taking place any public reference to details are inopportune.”
Dr. Jamieson issued a warning in regard to recently published statements as to the Association’s attitude. “Tho Association from time to time issues for the information of the public statements which have the authority of the profession,” he said. “It is to be greatly regretted that a misconception has arisen through the publication of a statement which was neither infor-' mative, accurate nor authoritative. Statements which do not bear the official authority of tho Association are not worthy of credence.” Beyond a statement that further negotiations with the Minister were in prospect, Dr. Jamieson said that ho had nothing to add.
