MOBILE FORCE.

NEED IN AUSTRALIA URGED

MELBOURNE, July 5. At a meeting of the Defence Council to-day the 3linister for Defence (3!r A. G. Street) urged on the Government the need for immediate acceleration of the more vital provisions of the threeyear defence programme. The council discussed the delay in obtaining Parliamentary sanction for raising a perm alien t mobile force of 7500 recommended by the InspectorGeneral of Military Forces (LieutenantGeneral Squires).

Emphasis was laid on the gravity of the international situation and the importance attached bv : Lieutenant-Gen-eral Squires to the value of a mobile force.

The council will continue its meeting to-morrow.
