The Melbourne correspondent of the “Sydney Morning Herald,” commenting on the race for the Melbourne Cup, says that Catalogue stunned the spectators at Flemingtou by winning with ease. The sole credit for his preparation rests with Mrs McDonald.. Catalogue is the oldest horse to win the Cup for 73 years. The only other successful eight-year-old was Tory Boy in 1865.

From three furlongs onward the race lacked excitement, as it was apparent that Catalogue could not he beaten. Bourbon, who came from a long way hack, might have had a, chance had he been brought along soonctr, but against- that Catalogue was never really extended and his reaction to a challenge could not he estimated.

Shean (the jockey) said that Catalogue was pulling him out of the saddle a 1,1 the way and; was going so well that he never had any doubt he 'would win.

Royal Chief, the favourite, never appeared to bo. going like a winner! Bavtle said the slow pace was against his mount. Catalogue’s time was five 'seconds outside the record for the {■ace.
