THE RACE ISSUE.

MORE CLAMOUR IN ITALY. For the second day in succession Virginio Gayda, who is regarded as Premier Benito Mussolini’s mouthpiece, recently devoted a long article in the “Giornale d’ltalia” to the race problem, and sought to show that recent experiences in other countries make it imperative for Italy to prevent an infiltration on “non-Aryan” elements, wirelesses Annaldo Cortesi from Rome to the “New York Times.”

The great clamour being raised in the newspapers on the subject makes it. evident that active steps are about to be taken against the Italian-Jewish population. Those people are obviously living in a fools’ (paradise who think that the only object of the Press campaign is to discourage German and Austrian Jewish refugees from coming to Italy. No hints have yet been given, however, as to the nature of the contemplated measures. Signor Gayda first cites Russia as an example of the disastrous results that may be expected when “one race capitulates before the representatives of another race.” The Russian revolution, he says, was fomented and directed by a Jewish minority. He admits that Lenin was not a Jew, but says that “his brain was formed in Germany, England, and Switzerland among foreign companions and authors of whom the great part were Semitic revolutionaries.” To-day Russia, despite appearances, is, in Signor Gayda’s opinion, “devastated” because the souls of the governing class are not the souls of the masses of the nation. In other European and American countries, continues Signor Gayda, the process of corrosion is less evident because the masses have greater power of resistance. ft nevertheless creates a distortion of political mentality making it incline toward interests, tendencies, ideals, and appetites that are not those of the nation. “The half-castes of the political spirit then represent the nation without being an expression of the nation,” he declares. “They become the corrupters of their people. “This corruption process develops like an avalanche until at a certain point it creates an explosion that subverts the destiny of the nation. This point is to-day present and recognisable in many nations. “From this internal disorders begin,” says Signor Gayda, adding significantly, “internal decadence and the disappearance of European and world order began with the triumph of the popular fronts and of the mentality that gives rise to them.” Signor Gayda ends by citing the “American Hebrew Review,” of which he says in terms of reproach that it “exalts Roosevelt” as having said in its issue of June 3, last:— “Li this destructive policy American Hebrewism salutes the spiritual and political coalition of the three sons of Israel, Litvinoff, Blum, and HoreBelisha.” The policy of race, therefore, naturally becomes the policy of the nation, he comments.
