DAFFODIL DAY.
A REMARKABLE DISPLAY AT THE WILLOWBY PARSONAGE. The success of the Rev. W. TV. Avery as a grower of daffodils drew the attendance pf oyer 700 people from all parts of Canterbury to the Willowby Alethodist Parsonage on Saturday afternoon, when a Daffodil Day was held in aid of the Ladies’ Parsonage Guild, the Church Trust, and overseas and home missions. About £SO was taken. In addition to 300 varieties blooming in the garden, Air Avery had staged a display of daffodils. A programme of music was arranged by Mr Allan Chapman and was broadcast through loudspeakers. Alesdames F. H. Chapman and A. S. Hayman did good business at a variety stall which was welL stacked with goods donated by women of the circuit. Airs G. H. R. Lill and a band of helpers served afternoon tea, provided by the women of the Willow by Alethodist Circuit. In .the bulb-naming competition the winners were “Cream Crinoline” (Airs D. Talbot, of Timaru), and “Winsome Glow” (Airs J. Richards, of Met liven). Declaring the function open Mr T. D. Burnett paid a tribute to the Christian church in fostering through the years the instinct of right treatment of one’s fellow men. Air Burnett said that the church was not a church unless it was facing difficulties. When a church became prosperous ana inflated with success it lost its message. A tribute to the ministry was paid by the speaker, who concluded by urging all present to remember the part taken by the church, and its message clown the ages. The Rev. AI. A. Rugby Pratt- (Connexional Secretary of the Alethodist Church of New Zealand), Air H. E. Herring and the Rev, Angus Alcßean (chairman of the South Canterbury Synodal district) conveyed greetings and congratulations to Air and Airs Avery, and the Willowbv circuit.
