THE COAL STRIKE
NON-UNION MINERS IDLE. SUBSTANTIAL SUPPLY CUT OFF. MEN URGE CONFERENCE. (United Press Association —Copyright.) (Received This Day, 11.0 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The Federal Cabinet will consider today representations made to Mr J. A. Lyons at Canberra on Saturday by a deputation of coal-miners. It. is stated in Union circles that the deputation’s proposal was that the Government convene a conference representing the miners and the owners, with an independent chairman, to consider the men’s claims.
The non-federation miners of Rothbury mines have offered to remain idle for the period of the strike. Coal won in these pits has been considered the only substantial source of northern coal available during the strike. Members of the Engine-drivers’ and Firemen’s Union employed in the mines decided to cease work immediately if their claims for improved conditions are not acceded to.
