MEETING OF PARISHIONERS. THE MOUNT SOMERS CHURCH. ACTIVITY IN WIDE DISTRICT. The annual meeting ol the Mount Somers Parochial District was held after evensong at Mount Somers on Ascension Day. the \ ioar (the Rev. Trevor Williams) presiding over a good attendance. The balance-sheet presented by the treasurer (Air J. T'. Bull), disclosed a small deficit. Receipts from offertories, envelopes, and subscriptions all showed increases, while the gross receipts of the annual bazaar totalled £195 10s 6d. Receipts for missions had' also shown considerable increase. The Vicar in his annual report stated that the year had been one of steady progress, keen interest had been displayed in renovating the interior furnishings of St. Aldan’s Church, Alount Somers. Arrangements would soon ho completed for the enlargement of the St Mary’s Church vestry at Mayfield, and the Bushside-Staveley districts were working enthusiastically for a church building in that end of the parish. 1 The Sunday Schools continued to flourish under the guidance of Alisses K. Bland and J. Vincent at Alount Somers, Alisses N. AY biting and R. Hewson at Mayfield, and Airs G. L. Bufton at Bushside. Another Sunday School had been started at Anama under Aliss G. Hewson. A Girls Friendly Society had been started at Mayfield. The Bible Classes continued to he an important feature of life in the parish. The Alt. Somers Bible Class donated £ll toward the cost of a new carpet for St. Aldan’s Church, anti members voluntarily contributed 3d per week each for missions, while it was also gratifying to note the liberal contribution made to missions by all the other Bible Classes in the district (Alford Forest, Bushside, and Ruapuna). The Ladies’ Guilds at Alount Somers, Mayfield, and Bushside continued to do good work, also the A 1 others’ Union at Bushside. Bible class m schools had been held at Alayfield, Springburn, and Mount Somers. Four hoys and six girls were confirmed at Ashburton in August. As the vestry had decided to forego the annual parish bazaar, parishioners were urged to increase their contributions, and to further supplement the finances of the parish it was purposed to hold a Golden Offering Sunday at the ■ parish festival of St, Aldan’s tide, when the Rev. J. F. Feron (Vicar of Ashburton) would he the preacher at all services. Thanks were expressed to the church wardens, vestrymen, lay-readers, Sunday School teachers, organists, and all who have given help to the church during the year. Plans for the enlargement of St. Alary’s Church vestry at Alayfield were approved, and Alessrs J. 3. Alulligan, and L. R. and G. N. Harrison were appointed supervisors^ On the motion of Air A. N. Grigg a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the secretary (Mr J. T. Bull). The following vestry was appointed: —Bishop’s warden, Mr A. N. Grigg; People’s warden, Air J. T. Bull; vestrymen, Alount Somers, Alessrs J. A. Al'ears, S. Al. A. Chaffey; Alayfield, Alessrs S. Shimmin, R. Taipina, L. P. Chapman, G. N. Harrison, R. T. Coward; Ruapuna, Alessrs J. H. Boaler, >S. Jones; Alford Forest, Alessrs J. R. Grigg, G. Rowntree; Staveley, Alessrs W. Norman, A. AY. Russell; Anama, Alessrs J. Alclver and A. Brown. All* Bull was appointed secretary-treasurer, and Ah* Chapman envelope secretary. Congratulations were extended to All* A. N. Grigg upon his election to the Ashburton County Council.
