LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian” May 27, 1888) Upper Ashburton Road Board —The monthly meeting of the Upper Ashburton Road Board was held today. Present, Messrs McLean, Sargent, and Campbell. Correspondence was read from the Ashburton Comity Council re division cf County into two portions. The Clerk was directed to reply that although the meeting of the Board was not a full one, the members present expressed their opinion that the change would he for the better and with a view to getting ratepayers to express their opinion on the matter the Board would call a public meeting to he held at the Road Board Office on July 3 at 11 a.m. It 'was decided to call tenders for grubbing gorse on certain properties fronting the Main South Road at the Saleyards, also fronting reserve on Alford Forest Road. The clerk was directed to call 1 the attention of owners to the state of the creek on the Brickyard Road* and request that the same be cleaned out. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian” May 27. 1913) The ' half-yearly meeting cf the Hakatere Club was held on Saturday. Mr H. It. C. McElrea presided and there was a fair attendance of members. The report and balance sheet were adopted. The election of officers resulted- as follows: —Patron, Mr John Studholme (re-elected), vice-pres-ident, Mr W. G. Hillier, committee, Messrs M. J. Moriarty, T. Slade, C. Thomas, J. Clifford, T. J. Turtill, C. McConachie,' J. McKay, A. Reid, and H. R. C. McElrea. The committee’s action in securing new rooms in Burnett Street was heartily approved, and it was decided to -shift into the new quarters as soon as they were available. Methven D’-ance —A concert and dance was held in the Methven Hall on Friday evening last, in aid of the Methven Pipe Band. The attendance fully appreciated the evenings entertainment. Mr A. Murray occupied the chair. Songs were rendered by Mesdames E. G. Craighead and Finlay, Messrs H. S. Gardiner, E. G. Craighead, Crawford brothers, Walker, F. R. Whitelock, Nash and McWhinnie, and the accompanists were Mesdames Craighead, Cuff, and Finlay, Miss Twomey. A Highland dance was contributed, by Miss McLauchlan, and instrumental items by members of the Pipe Band and Mr Ginnibert, while Mrs Grover and Miss G. McLean gave a pianoforte duet.
