Bradman won the toss, and Australia hatted. Fingleton and Brown made a quiet start against the speed and accuracy of Gover and the medium-fast swingers of Watts, each of whom moved the ball about. Berry, a young ' recruit from Yorkshire, a. medium-paced bonder, flighted the ball well and worried Brown, who was nearly stumped on the leg side. He survived an appeal for leg-before-wieket. in the same over. His display was othenvise solid, hut not spectacular. Bradman Opens Jauntily. The game proceeded dully, relieved by an occasional boundary. The scoring rate livened shortly before luncheon, but Brown would not force the pace. The openers seemed likely to stay all day, when Fingleton, in trying to pull a full-toss, Avas clean bowled. Bradman began jauntily. None of the Surrey bowlers appeared really threatening, and most of them • were called on before lunch. Brown, when 60, Avas badly dropped by Holmes at mid-eff from F. 8,. Brown. Facing Squires and Go\ r er after lunch, both batsmen were quiet, the runs coming mostly in singles. The partnership added, 70 in 100 minutes. The batsmen continued without fireworks, but.dealt with the howling with, great ease. Success With New Ball. The 200 appeared in 165 minutes, and Gover and Watts took the new ball. The letter’s first ball swung away and Brown Avas caught at the Avicket. He hatted for three hours and hit faur fours. It was his most impressive innings of the tour. Bradman, just in time, jabbed his bat doAvn on a good hall from Watts. He reached his century immediately after in 130 minutes. Badcock gave a bright but short display. Hassett opened comfortably and continued Avitli his usual unhurried efficiency. Bradman was brilliantly caught in attempting a leg glance off Watts. He was at the crease 190 minutes and hit 11 fours. Chipperfield hammered Squires and secured three fours in one over. Hasset, at 36 was missed bv Gregory. He was barracked at times "for sloAvness.
