BOXING.
DOWNES—ADAMS FIGHT. The Ashburton Boxing Association has arranged another very attractive programme for next Thursday, and a glance at the ring record of the two professionals, Les Adams and Barney Downes gives promise of plenty of thrills for those who attend. A young boxer of the up and coming type, Barney Downes, the Wellington man, comes to the South Island with a very impressive record. In the amateur ranks Downes had 28 fights for only three losses, and since turning professional two years ago has defeated both the well known Australian boxers, Cyril and Bill Pluto, while the scalps pt Harold Reeves, Clarrie Marshall (2), Jock McMahon, and Era Jacobs also adorn the fistic belt of Downes. Incidentally the Wellington boy has
won 17 of liis bouts by «fche short route, and proof that he is punching harder than ever Is furnished by liis recent k.o. win over George McKay, the Invercargill li^jit-heavy-weight. If Adams is to maintain his recent run of success, he will be forced to fight with all his guile and skill against a very powerful lighter, with youth and weight in liis favour. If successful on this occasion, Adams will have surmounted the last obstacle on the road to a title match.
