INNINGS WIN

AUSTRALIANS BEAT NORTHANTS. WICKETS FALL LIKE NINEPINS. VISITORS’ STEADY BOWLING. (United Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 9.5 a.m.) LONDON, May 20. Australia defeated Northampton by an innings and 77 runs. The weather was warmer and bright for the resumption of the match. The remaining Northampton batsmen fell like ninepins,, adding only 54 to their overnight total. Ward was the destructive agent. The first ball of the day dismissed Timms. Brookes was often beaten :by the spin oIN the ball to-day, but managed to hang on till lie scored 37. The other batsmen were weak and hesitant by comparison with the opening pair. Northants followed on, the second innings being virtually a repetition of the first. The early batsmen, Nelson, Greenwood and Snowden, played well, but the others showed little class against the steady bowling. Greenwood alone batted with vigour. His. team mates seemed to be trying to avert an innings defeat. , ■ ’ -

A hailstorm stopped play ; for a quarter of an hour, but even this could not prevent an Australian victory. The New Zealanders, O’Brien and Merritt, were out as the result of weak strokes. A ninth-wicket stand between James and Partridge realised 40 runs—the best of the innings. Australia won with half an hour to spare. The following are the scores:—•
