GUILTY OF ASSAULT.
A MAORI SENTENCED. OAMARU, This Day. Before Mr Bundle, S.M., a Maori, Paani Rewhiti Porete, who was charged with having assaulted David Leonard and Vivian Leonard, at Moeraki, on December 29, pleaded guilty. The occurrence took place during the Moeraki centenary celebrations. Accused mistook Mrs Leonard for another woman, and caught her by the throat, throwing her to the ground. Her husband intervened, and was also assaulted. Constable H. Wooddle said that accused was becoming a menace at Moeraki. Accused was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment, and ordered to make good the damage to clothing, £2 10s, and was admitted to probation for three years.
