THEATRE PROJECT.
MUNICIPAL BUILDING MOOTED.
COUNCIL MAY DISCUSS SCHEME,
There is a probability that a scheme for the building of a, municipal theatre for Ashburton, on the site of the Majestic Theatre, which was destroyed by fire several months ago, may be placed before the Borough Council at an early date. When the question was mentioned to the Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods) to-day he stated that nothing had so far come before the Council in regard, to the proposal, though lie had expected ‘a letter to be before the last meeting. He said he would not be surprised if some such scheme came forward for consideration.
A “Guardian” reporter learned, today that the municipal theatre project is a suggestion made by a company with headquarters in Wellington. If adopted, it would mean that the theatre would be owned by the Borough Council and leased for the showing of pictures, with provision for local functions of all kinds as required.
