FRUIT WASTED.
WELLINGTON LOADING DELAY. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 25. Because of an unfortunate set of circumstances, seyeral thousand cases of fruit, mainly apricots, from districts in Central, Otago, which were to have been sold m Wellington, have been ruined. The main factor was a delay in unloading caused by several reasons, one of which was .very wet weather on the waterfront, which caused unloading to be suspended. Another factor was that Saturday was Anniversary Day, and : there was no waterfronfr work. . The fruit had to remain in the ship s hold and when it was finally unloaded and brought into the market for sale to-day some of the cases presented a sorry spectacle. The fruit unloaded this morning left Roxburgh on January 19 and arrived oil ’Saturday. A second consignment, which left Roxburgh last Thursday, arrived on Monday. Rain prevented it from being discharged, and it was carried back to Lyttelton last night. It will arrive back to-morrow, which is the day of the watersiders’ picnic, but if possible it will be unloaded by members of the permanent staff. Because of to-morrow’s picnic here, another consignment arriving at Lyttelton to-day will not be taken on •board.
