DEATH OF A FARMER.
FOUND WITH GUN WOUND 1 IN HEAD.
TRAGEDY IN MAYFIELD DISTRICT
With a shotgun wound in the hack of his head Mr James Toner, aged 49, a well-known farmer of the Mayfield district, where he was born, was found dead at 10 o’clock this morning. There was a shotgun beside the body. Mr Toner had recently sold his farm, and is vsaid to have worried a good deal over the transaction. He was last seen alive at 9.30 a.m., when he was preparing some implements for the clearing sale of his property which was to have taken place shortly. Half an hour later his nephew, James Toner, heard the report of a gun, and with a Mr Harvey went to a shed where they found Mr Toner in a crouching position on his knees with the gun beside him. Mr Toner was a single man. He had relatives in Timaru.
An inquest weft opened before the district Coroner (Mr T2. C. Bathurst) this afternoon.
