STONE-THROWING
VERY PREVALENT IN ASHBURTON WARNING BY THE MAGISTRATE. A warning of drastic measures against lads charged in future with throwing stones was issued by Mr H. Morgan, S.M., when he held a sitting of the Children’s Court in Ashburton this morning.
Ten boys w’ere brought before him on charges of having throw'n stone 9 at telephone line insulators, and they were severely castigated by the Magistrate, who said that it had been brought to his, notice that stonethrow'ing w r as very prevalent in Ashburton.
One of the boys admitted that in throwing a stone at a dog he had hit an old ladj* on the back, and it w'as stated that it was only by chance that she had not been badly injured. The Magistrate said he would deal drastically with any future cases of this kind, and he hoped his remarks in this respect would be brought to the notice of parents and teachers throughout the district.
In three of the cases, parents w r ere ordered to pay 5s each toward the cost of repairs to the insulators.
