ENTERTAINMENTS.

ST. JAMES THEATRE. Wtihj his last fifty dollars, “Deacon Devlin,” an impoverished race-track follower, enters an old plug in a race against the favourites of the exclusive Fairfield stables, operated by Mrs Fay Costigan and her trainer, Baltimore. Tod, Mason, an unknown jockey with a new technique in riding, rides the entry to win! Much impressed, MrsOostigan induces the Deacon and Mason to join her outfit. Tod with his “monkey on the stick” style of riding, wins every meet in the United States, establishing an all-time record for jockeys. This pro vokes Lei and Rogers, owner of the rival stable —who attempts to bribe Tod to wear his colours. This paves the way for the thrills that abound in the race-track film, “The Gentleman from Louisiana,” showing at the St. James Theatre to-night and tomorrow night, together with “The Wildcatter,” a story of the dangers ran by the men who bore for black gold-oil. There are many tense moments in this fast moving story of America’s oilfields.

The third section (under 16) of the mduth organ competition will be held to-morrow afternoon at the matinee, and the finalists will be held at the evening session.
