COUNTY CENTRES

(From Our Own Correspondent*.) MAYFIELD. THE A. AND P. ASSOCIATION. The committee of the Mayfield Agricultural and pastoral Association met recently, Mr W. J. Early presiding. Mr A. V. Barrett wrote resigning his position as trustee of the reserve fund account because of his having left the district. Mr Gordon Johnston, the present treasurer, was appointed to fill the vacancy. The District Traffic Manager of the New Zealand Railways wrote that the 'Springburn train timetable had been altered to allow the train to be run on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and after December 10, on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Mr J. W. McKergow was elected a life member of the Association. It was decided that in futpre, life membership fees be paid with the reserve account. The Women’s Institute. The monthly meeting of the Mayfield Women’s Institute was held recently, Mrs J. J. Mulligan presiding. Mrs R-. Austin read a link letter from a member of the Mayfield Institute in England. It was decided that the garden party be held at the home of Mrs G. J. Murdoch on Wednesday, December 2, and that a rose' show be held as well, the schedule for which has been drawn up by Mrs L. R. Harrison. Members of the debating circle, under the supervision of Mrs W. S. Greenslade, read parts of two Shakespearean plays, “As You Like-It” and “Julius Caesar.” Two Maori part songs were also given by the circle, and were much enjoyed. A bring and buy stall for the funds of the health camp brought in £1 3s. A large number of toys were handed in as_ Christmas gifts for one of the Presbyterian Orphanages. The following were winners of the various competitions, the flowers being judged by Mrs J. (D. King (Ruapuna):—'Single bloom, Mrs L. R. Harrison 1, Mesdames J. McCormick and G. J. Murdoch (equal) 2, Mrs R. Austin 3; vase of flowers, Mrs S. R. Johnstone 1, Mrs L. R. Harrison 2, . Mrs W. Whiting 3; small bowl, Mrs J. McCormick 1, Mrs Joseph Murdoch 2, Mrs W. T. Elmslie 3; spike or truss, Mrs G. J. Murdoch 1, Mrs L. R. Harrison 2, Mrs D. J. Morrow 3; large bowl of flowers, Mrs W. T. Elmslie 1; Christmas gift not to cost more than 2s, Mrs W. T. Elmslie 1, Mrs G. W. Ross 2. An amusing competition for the social half-hour was an impromptu one-minute speech, the winner being Mrs G. G. Baxter. It was decided to give 10s to the Mayfield School Committee funds. 1 The hostesses were Mesdames Rushton, Hewson, and Whiting.
