MR HERRING’S WORK.
Sir, —It is almost a year ago that the electors of Ashburton got the surprise of their lives, when Mr Herring was returned as their representative in Parliament. For many years men of different views and political colour had represented them, that most people believed that “histoi’y would again repeat itself.” In my humble judgment, Ashburton has no need to regret the result disclosed when the “numbers went up.” Mr Herring has proved himself to be a “live wire” (all live wires are red), displaying ability and enthusiasm to serve the electors, beyond the expectations oFTiis most ardent supporters. I was pleased to see Mr Frampton '(chairman of the Ashburton County Council) giving honour where honour was due, and praise where praise was due, when commenting on the part played, by Mr Burnett and Mr Herring, in proposing and piloting through the House the Ashburton County Rivers Bill. The freshened appearance of the Ashburton railway station, the station officials residences, and other buildings ; the improved facilities at the saleyards loading platform; the proposed and sanctioned renovation and enlargement at the Ashburton Post Office; the immediate commencement in the erecting of the new Courthouse; soliciting the personal investigation and aid of the Hon. Air Semple, Minister of Public Works in the Hampstead Drainage Loan, with his generous aid, permitting the scheme to. be brought to fruition; the acceptance of a tender to build, a new post office and postmaster’s residence at Mayfield. Air Herring’s pressing of the claims of the above-mentioned works, largely contributed to their being done, and sanctioned to be done. In my 36 years residence in Ashburton, I do not remember the contsitueney being represented by one who is so anxious to serve and become conversant with the needs of the electors, as Air Herring. He is to be congratulated with the other members of the Labour Party in creating such a stir in the “valley of political dry hones." Their first session’s work gives every indication that the ship of State has come through the “doldrums” and, entered the “trade winds.”.
Air Herring’s contributions to the pages of Hansard have also made its reading more interesting. A GRATIFIED ELECTOR.
