THE CORONATION.

A LEAD BY POPLAR. FREE ELECTRICITY. Poplar, one of the poorest London boroughs, which distinguished' itself by remarkable demonstrations of loyalty with street decorations during the Silver Jubilee last year, is setting am example to the country, in preparations for the Coronation next'Alay (says “The IDaily Telegraph” of September 24). Already streets have formed committees to make arrangements for the decorations. Each street appoints two collectors to receive individual subscriptions. The money will pay for bunting and illuminations, teas for children, and other celebrations yet to be decided. For the illuminations Poplar Council has decided to supply electricity free from 6 p.m. on May 11, the day before the Coronation, until 6 a.m. on Alay 13. There will be a- charge of sixpence for connecting each strip of lamps to the maim, and the applications must be made by the street organisations. The apparatus used, must be approved by the Electricity Department. This stipulation is made to insure that unsatisfactory materials imported from abroad are not employed. Air R, Illingworth, the Borough engineer, said to a representative of “The Daily Telegraph” that the cost of supplying the current free would he about £IOO. . . “I have never known anything tore the enthusiasm in Poplar,” said another Council offical. “Some of the street committees hate been hard at work for a month.” It is understood, that other London Borough Councils intend to supply electricity at cheap rates, about a halfpenny a unit, as at the Silver Jubilee. Hammersmith has voted £4OOO for illuminations and other celebrations.
