LETTER RESENTED.
BOROUGH COUNCIL AND COUNTY CLOSING OF THE REST ROOM. Resentment of a letter received by the Ashburton Borough Council in regard to the closing of the women’s rest l-oom in Tancred Street on four days of the week was expressed at the meeting of the Council last evening. the Ashburton County Council forwarded a copy ol a letter it had received from several women’s organisations pointing out the necessity for the rest loom in Tancred Street and advocating the provision of this room for six days in the week. As many of the members of these organisations resided in the County the Council trusted that the request would receive favourable consideration. It was also pointed out that the County Council’s annual grant to the Domain included a contribution toward the rest room.
The Mayor: The suggestion in this that we have closed the room without giving the question due consideration js hardly the thing one would expect from another local body. If they had thought moie about it, they would not have rushed into sending a letter like this. As to the donation to the rest room, when we asked the County Council to give a donation toward the cost of the room, they replied that they had no authority to make a grant, the Domain grant was, however, increased to £125 from £IOO to cover the question, hut the extra amount was dropped later. If it comes to that, the County gives £IOO to the Domain, but it costs the Borough over £9OO. 1 think we should reply in the same way we replied to the other bodies that wrote about the room, that we did not close the room till we had gone into the question very thoroughly. It was agreed to reply as the Mayor suggested.
