NECESSITY IN PALESTINE.

BRITAIN FORCED TO DECISION.

DUTY UNDER THE MANDATE. (United Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 11.50 n.m.) LONDON, September An important statement of the British Government’s policy in connection with Palestine has been issued by the Colonial Office. The statement says : “After a careful review of the whole situation his Majesty’s Government is satisfied that a campaign of violence and threats of violence by which the Arab leaders are attempting to influence the policy of his Majesty’s Government cannot be allowed to continue, and! that more rapid and effective action must be taken to bring the present state of disorder to an end with the least possible delay. An additional division of troops is accordingly bring sent to Palestine, and it has been decided -that the supreme military control in the country be placed in the hands of Lieut-General J. G. Dill (late Director-General of Military operations and Intelligence at the War Office).

“The Government expresses deep regret that such a decision should have been forced upon it, but states that Britain accepted the mandate for Palestine upon terms which involved responsibility for the welfare of all ctions of the population in Palestine, and it regards this responsibility as a trust which it has no choice but to carry out.’’—British Official Wireless.

DAYLIGHT CURFEW IMPOSED. PENDING PAYMENT OP FINE. (Received This Day, 9.20 a.m.) JERUSALEM, September 7. Daytime curfew at 6.30 a.m. and 4.30 p.m., superimposed on the existing night-time curfew, has been ordered at Nablus till the collective fine for the disorders on August 3 has been paid.

ARAB LEADERS LOSING CONTROL MARTIAL LAW EXPECTED SOON. LONDON, September 7. A lorry load of British troops in Palestine was attacked by Arab rifle fire three miles from Nablus. Several of the troops are reported to have been wounded.

Three Royal Air Force ’planes, in response to a wireless call, pursued the raiders, who escaped! at nightfall, taking refuge in caves. The Jerusalem correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” says that as the Arab terrorists are getting beyond the control of the moderate leaders, martial law is expected shortly.

REPERCUSSION IN INDIA. NORTH-WEST FRONTIER ACTIVITY. LONDON, September 6. The Karachi correspondent of the “Daily Mail” says concentrations of Mohmands and other tribesmen are reported on the North-West Frontier, where recently there has been considerable propaganda concerning events in Palestine. It is stated that all strategic points around Peshawar are occupied bjt British and Indian troops. Additional bombers liaA’e been sent to the Royal Air Force frontier stations.

FIRST TROOPS LEAVE BRITAIN.

(Received This Day, 10.10 a.m.) LONDON, September 7. A detachment of the First Battalion of the Coldstream Guards has left for Palestine.
