SNOW IN SOUTHLAND.
LAMBING LOSSES FEARED. (Per Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, September 5. Although snow has fallen throughout Southland, no material damage has been reported, but lambing losses are expected. No rivers are flooded, but the roads in many areas are hard to negotiate, and the highway! to Te Anau is impassable owing to a heavy covering of snow on the Gorge Saddle. Communication between Invercargill and other parts of the province in uninterrupted, and no breaks in power supply have been reported. The northern district seems to have had the worst of the storm. The country around Lumsden was coveied with snow yesterday to a depth of six inches. The Mossburn district is covered to a depth of six inches, while snow is 10 inches deep at Athol. The greatest fall is reported from Burwood, where snow is lying to a depth, of 14 inches. At Te Anau and the Hollyford Valley the weather has been extremely rough for the past few days, and that area is now coated with snow. No snow fell in Invercargill yesterday, but the weather was still cold and stormy.
