CRICKET.
TROPHY FOR BRIGHTER BATTING WELLINGTON, September 4. An offer of a trophy for competition among senior players during the coming season has been made to the Wellington Cricket Club by an old supporter. In announcing the offer at the annual meeting of the club, Mr J. S. Hanna said that the donor had left it to him to decide the conditions, and he suggested that the trophy should be awarded to the first senior player to make 100 runs, on. the conditions, first, that the runs should be made before Christmas, and second that the runs were made in not more than two hours and a half, A voice: Too long. Mr Hanna: And the third condition is that the 100 runs are made in the first innings of a match. A voice: I don’t think anybody will ever take that trophy. Mr Hanna: Well, there you are; it is a sporting bet. I think it would put a stop to pottering about at the wickets. I have never seen any good come of pottering about at the wickets.
