HOCKEY.

WOMEN’S TOURNAMENT. EASTERN SOUTHLAND WINS. BLENHEIM, September 4Eastern Southland defeated Canterbury by one goal to nil in the semi-final of the Dominion women’s hockey tournament this afternoon. The winners will meet Otago in the final to-morrow afternoon. There was no score at half-time. In the middle of the second half Miss K. Bond collected from a penalty corner and scored brilliantly for Eastern. The game was one of the hardest of the tourney, the issue being in doubt until the very end. Canterbury missed two good chances of scoring in the first half. There was little between the teams, the match being even all through. Mrs A. D. Reid (captain of the Eastern Southland women’s hockey team for the last six years, and of the New Zealand teams which visited Australia and played Fiji, will retire at the conclusion of the present tournament. The most outstanding player in the Dominion, Mrs Rejd, has represented Eastern for the last 12 years. Though a veteran in experience, she is still a young woman. She began her representative career at the age of 14.
