FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From tho “Guardian,’ Sept. 4, 1886). Lease of Oddfellows’ Hall.—We notice that Mr R. Elston has taken a lease of the Oddfellows’ Hall. Mr Elston has been custodian of the Town Hall ever since its erection, and. his careful management speaks well of his ability to conduct the new venture. - Sale of Property.—Mr Bullock announces that on account of lithographic plans of Mr Fooks’ property, near the Woollen Mills, not having vet been prepared the sale previously announced to take place on Saturday next has been postponed for a week from that date. ( Secession from the County.—‘The County Council has had before it lately tw-o petitions for the separation of existing and the formation of new road district. In both instances the petitioners deem that they have good cause for complaint at the treatment they have received at he hand of that body. The first of the two presented was the Dromore petition, which has not yet been finally reported oh. The second, the Mayfield petition, was presented at the meeting of the Council on July 2, and set forth that petitioners who are ratepayers of the upper portion of the Rangitata Road District, desiro to separate from the lower portion of said district.’
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Sept. 4, 1911). No-License Meeting.—ln deference to shopkeepers the no-license meeting opposite the Somerset Hotel in the open air to-night will commence at a quarter to eight as advertised and announced at the no-license meeting last night. St. Mary’s Tennis Club.—At the annual meeting of the St. Mary’s Tennis Club the following officers were elected: —Patron, the Very Rev. Dean J. J. O’Donnell; president, Mr S. Madden; vice-presidents, Rev. Lather O’Hare, Messrs W. Cunningham, M. J. Burgess, H. P. Madden, T. Buckley, T. Staunton, J. Farrell, D. McDonnell, T. Howling, W. Goal, E. Langley, D. Fitzgerald and J. McQuilkin; captain, Mr J. F. Pritchard; vice-captain, Mr H. Walsh; treasurer, Mr T. L. Brophy, secretary, Mr M. O’Brien; committee, Messrs T. Berry, J. McCormick T. Purcell, A. and N. Fitzgerald.
Vat in Butter Factory.—A new 400 gallon vat is to be installed in the Ashburton butter factory to cope with the extra supply of cream. Mr Meharry, recently of Wanganui lias taken up his duties of butter maker at the factory.
