FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Sept. 2, 188(j) Vacancies on Boi'ougjh Council.— Messrs T.Sealy, 1). Thomas, G. Oates, G. W. Andrews, J. A. CaygilJ and J, Tucker were to-day nominated as candidates for the three vacant seats on the Borough Council. An election will be held on September 9. ■lnspection of Volunteers. —An inspection parade of the Ashburton Rifles and Guards iyas held laist evening by Major Newall. There were about 50 Rifles and 30 Guards on parade. Presentation to Footballer.—The team which represented Canterbury in the inter-provincial football match wifh Otago passed through Ashburton by the express last evening homeward bound. Previous to Mr E. J. Fooks alighting from the train here, Mr GH. Helmore., the captain of the team, on behalf ol' the representatives, presented him with a mark of their esteem in the shape of a handsome gold scarf pin. Willows in River Bed.—The. work of planting the space between the railway and traffic bridges with willow stakes is pretty well proceeded with. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. fFrom the “Guardian,” Sept. 2, 1911) Grandstand for Showgrounds.— With additional contributions received the total amount to hand toward the grandstand fund in connection with the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association is £lßl. It is necessary to have £SOO in hand before the erection of the building is commenced, and there does not appear to be much prospect of a grandstand being btfflt in readiness for the next annual show. Several of the younger members of the Association at yesterday’s meeting of the general committee intimated their intention to institute a vigorous campaign for funds within tte next few weeks. Water and Rents.—Since the institution of the high pressure water system there, has been a marked increase in tfhe rents of houses. A resident informed one of our reporters that in some instances the rent of houses connected with the water mains was at least 2s a week in excess of that levied before the institution of the scheme. Secession from the County.—The Local Bills Committee of the House of Representatives, to whom was referred the Mount Hutt County Bill, reported to-day that they had taken evidence before and against the Bill, and considered a largely signed petition against it. On Mr C. A."C. Hardy’s amendment the Bill was referred back. They recommended that the Bill bo not allowed to proceed.
