OBITUARY.
MR JOHN SHARPLIN. One of Canterbury’s early settlers, Mr John Sbarplin, died recently at Te Rehunga, North Island. Mr Sbarplin, who was 86, came to New Zealand in 1858 with his parents at the age of eight, on the ship Indiana, and settled at Church Bush, Woodend. He spent his early years as as a contractor in Rangiora, where he married Miss Sarah Ann Edlin, daughter of Mr Harry Edlin, also of Rangiora. Mr Sharplin later resided at Oxford, where he entered the sawmilling industry. In 1890 he came to join his brother, Mr Harry Sharplin, and Mr Hugh Boyd, who had formed Sharplin and Company’s mills, of Alford Forest. He remained in the Alford Forest district for about 20 years. Mr Sharplin leaves a widow, four sons, and three daughters.
