THE WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP. MARLBOROUGH DEFEATS ASHBURTON. BLENHEIM, August 31. The weather was fine but dull for the second day of the New Zealand women’s hockey tournament. The grounds were heavy because of the cutting up received on Saturday, followed by further rain on Sunday. Features of to-day’s matches were the deesive wins scored by Eastern Southland, Wellington, Canterbury, Marlborough B, and Wairarapa. None of these teams was scored against. In section A, Otago and Marlborough are undefeated, and it appears that the issue lies between them for section honours. Canterbury is showing best form in Section B, and is the only unbeaten team. It appears assured of reaching the semi-finals. Eastern and Wellington, on the play to-date, are the strongest in Section C. Neither has yet been beaten. To-day’s results were:— Section A Marlborough B 4, Ashburton 0. Otago 3, Southland 0. Ruahine a bye. Section B. Canterbury 7, Nelson 0. Wairarapa 5, Marlborough A 0. Auckland 3, South Otago 2. Section C. Eastern Southland 9, Wanganui 0. Wellington 7, South Canterbury 3. Akitio 3, Poverty Bay 2. MARLBOROUGH B’S WIN. (Special to the “Guardian”). BLENHEIM, This Day.

In the first half Marlborough were on top, but in the second Ashburton had the advantage. Loach was again outstanding. F. Donaldson was the best half. The forwards all played well. On opening, play went to the Ashburton circle. After several good saves by the backs, Marlborough scored from a corner, Z. Andrei! netting after McKay had stopped a hot shot by E. Woolley. Marlborough 1 Ashburton ... ... 0 Gudsell put in a good run and beat all but the goalie, who kicked clear. Some even play followed. From a rollin at half-way Andrell centred, for E. Woolley to score. Marlborough ... ... 2 Ashburton 0 Marlborough continued to attack with occasional rallies by Ashburton,
A. Loach clearing well. Several times Ashburton conceded a corner, and following a shot at goal, B. Mills scored from a scramble. Marlborough 3 Ashburton 0 From a bully the ball went back to E. ‘Loach, who sent out to Gudsell, and the. forwards went away, but the movement broke down, the ball going out. From a roll-in. M. Norton went down the line, but her shot missed, a corner resulting, and B. Mills netted. Marlborough 4 Ashburton 0 Half-time came immediately afterwards. On resuming, Ashburton set up a strong attack, L. Donaldson sending the forwards away, but Ashburton were unable to penetrate the strong defence. Play continued, to be yery even, but Ashburton were having the best of the game, play being in Marlborough’s half, except on a few occasions when their fast wings broke away. The Ashburton backs were equal to the occasion and always sent play back to the other end. The game ended without further score. Marlborough 4 Ashburton 0
