AUGUST 24. 1851—Discovery cf gold, in Ballarat. 1857 —Opening of road between Christchurch and Lyttelton via Sumner (cost £38,000). 1874—Railway, Rakaia to Ashburton, opened. 1914—Fall of Namur. 1921—R38 wrecked at Hull. 1924 —British Government resigned, Mr Ramsay MacDonald forming National Government. 1927—Saecc and Vanzetti executed. 1935 —Australian shipping strike ends.
