LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Aug. 24, 1886). Diorama Exhibition. Scliacht’s Royal Polytechnic (Diorama was exhibited at the Town Hall on Saturday evening. The attendance was rather small, but the entertainment was one of the best of its kind, ever shown in Ashburton. The principal views were those cf the recent Tarawera eruptions, the Kimberly goldfields, and many places cf interest throughout the world. The mechanical effects in some of the views were very fine. Election of Councillors.—The annual election of three councillors to on the Ashburton Borough Council will be held on Thursday, September 9. Messrs J. A. Cay gill, T. Sealy, and D. Tnoinas are the members who retire by rotation. The Catholic Jubilee.—The Reverend Father Le Menant des Chesnais commenced the exercises of the Catholic jubilee at the Catholic Church yesterday. At the 11 o’clock Mass the reverend gentleman explained the conditions on which the indulgence of Pope Leo XIII. would be granted. In the evening the preacher took as his text “Let us fall down before the God who made us, because he is the Lord oiir God,” and in an eloquent find scholarly address refuted the “false doctrines of the so-called philosophers of our day.” TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Aug. 24, 1911). Apathy Among Electors—The apathy among Ashburton people in matters of public importance is strikingly exemplified in their attitude toward the new boundaries of the electoral district as proclaimed by the Representation Commissioners. Although it is patent that this district has been shockingly mangled and all community of interest destroyed, no public body or section of the people has thought fit to lodge any objection or protest. 1 Passes for Nurses.—The proposal made by Mr W. Nosworth.y, M.P. tor Ashburton, that free railway passes should be given for Plunket nurses is one that deserves to be favourably considered, by the Government. Constable at Rakaia.—Constable P. Cassidy has been appointed Clerk of the Magistrate’s Court at Rakaia and Clerk of the Selwyn Licensing District, iai succession to Constable J. P. Clarkson, who has been transferred. The Mollyhawk.—While on a, visit to the mouth of the Ashburton River yesterday, Mr D. Tovey picked up a particularly fine specimen of the sea bird known as the mollyliawk. The bird, which measured 6ft. Bin. with the wings outstretched, had evidently been shot at sea and washed ashore.
