Russell (half-back of the North Island Rugby team) left Ashburton yesterday after spending a few days here. He is a nephew' of Mr G. I*. Suttie, Greenstreet. CANTERBURY BEATS MANAWATU rf»er Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 19. Although Canterbury defeated the touring Manawatu team by 22 points to 9 to-day, the performance of the home team was far from convincing, and with two-thirds of the game gone Manawatu was extremely unlucky not to have a useful lead. After am even first spell, Manawatu attacked for a long period but lack of finish prevented scores. In the last quarter Canterbury woke up and scored three tries with brilliant combined work. NOMADS The following have been selected to represent the' Ashburton Association Football CFub in its match against the Nomads (Christchurch) Club to be played at Ashburton next Saturday, at 3 p.m. — Goalkeeper: H. B. Gowans. Backs : T. Thomson, John Gowans. •Halves: K. Macfarlane, D. Gowans, Jim Gowans. , _ Forwards: S. McElhmney, E, Thomson, M. Petersen, L. Wilson and, C. Gowans. , TT „ . Reserves: —C. Clarke, W. Graham. The Nomads Club is one of tho strongest teams in Christchurch and tho local side will get a good sample of the standard of Jootball that they will, experience in tho English Cup Competition. The Ashburton team will be a strong side and although F. W. Cutler will be missing from the goal, the team will be quite up to Cup standard.
