ASHBURTON SHOW

DIAMOND JUBILEE FIXTURE.

MANY NEW CLASSES ADDED.

DECISIONS OF THE COMMITTEE.

, The general committee of the Ashhurton Agricultural and Pastoral As—sociation met this afternoon, the president (Mr A. N. Grigg) presiding. A motion of sympathy was passed with the iii-relatives of Mr P. Shearer, a former president of the association, members standing in silence. The South Island Pig Breeders’ Association forwarded the names of Dr. Z. E. Zillett (Sefton) and Mr A. Barnett (Leeston) as judges of the pig section. It was decided that Mr Bar—nett be a second choice if the judge already chosen could not act. It was decided to thank Mr J. Montgomery for his offer to donate £lO 10s for a farm competition. The same sub-committee as last year was appointed to consider holding a farm competition, except that Colonel J. Findlay was appointed in place of Mr J. H. Grigg, who would be absent in Australia.

A long list of special prizes and donations for the jubilee show was read. The president said it was most encouraging, and showed that great interest was being taken in. the show. Mr F. Frampton said that at a meeting of past presidents it had been decided to donate a cup for the most points in light horses. Mr J. Butterick offered a prize for a model homestead of a 200 acre farm. He said that many farms were badly laid out. It was decided that this competition be held, and that the association provide a second prize. The caretaker (Mr S. Wilson) reported that wilful damage had been done to the grandstand at the Showgrounds, glass having been broken and the backs of seats bent. It was decided to refer the matter to the Ashburton Rugby Union, as the damage was done on a. day when football was being played\ A motion of sympathy was passed with Mr S. \Vilson in his illness.

Reports and, recommendations in connection with the Diamond Jubilee Show on November 5 were presented by the sheep, cattle and pigs, draught horses, light; horses, cookery, agricultural produce and flowers, needlework and fancywork committees, and were adopted, Several new classes in all sections and increases in prize money in some of the sections were the feature of the recommcndations.

“As you know, the day of the horse in the street is gone,” said Mr S‘. P. Taylor! in suggesting that at competition for a motor delivery van, suitable for any tradesmen’s purpose, be substituted for a, tradesmen’s turn-out.

Mr D. 'G. Wright said. it would be a pity to cut out the tradesmen’s turn—out because there were no entries last year. The draught horse section would in any case be the wrong place for a motor delivery v_an class. _ ‘

It was decided that the tradesmen’s turn-out be left in the schedule and that motor delivery can exhibits be not judged in the ring, and be excluded from the draught horse section, the class being referred to the Competitions Committee.

To avoid accidents, it was decided to complete children’s classes before hunt—ers’ events, and to arrange for 13on pony rings, Recommendations from last year’s committee that more loose~hoxes and stalls be provided for the fight horse section and. that an entrance from the light horse boxes to the paddocks be made were. adopted.
