LOOKING BACK.
FIFTY YEARS SYNE.
(From the “Guardian,” July 29, 1886.)
Court at Methven. —The first sitting of the newly established Resident Magistrate’s Court at Methven was held at the Road Board office yesterday. Mr Clunes Cameron, J.P., Mr C. A. C. Hardy, J.P., and Mr D. Cameron, 1 J.P., were on the Bench. Four civil cases were heard.
Name of Town District.—We gather from a private telegram from Mr J. Ivess, the member for Wakanui, that the petition praying that the name of the Town District of Hakatere be not changed has been presented to the Colonial Treasurer. The Ashburton Hounds.—The Ashburton Hounds met at Longbeach yesterday afternoon, and several nice runs were obtained over stiff ditch and bank country. The small field comprised Messrs J. C. N. Grigg, A. Thorpe, C. Harold, J. Shearer, Gifford Moore, C. Bond, Norrish, H. Milner, and others.
Books for Library.—We understand that the books which were ordered for the Mount Somers Library from England through Mr T. F. Farley, are aboard the: S.S. lonic, and will be in port in a few days.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From th 3 “Guardian,” July 29, 1911.) Crisis in Asquith’s statement on the Moroecon question in the House of Commons to-day is being eagerly awaited. Considerable business is being done by Lloyd’s in war risks. A certain mercantile firm in Ashburton was advised by cable from London yesterday afternoon to insure their goods, afloat and to be shipped, against war risks. The advice states, however, that the risk is at the present time small. Women’s Golf.—The following are the best scores put in for the women’s July medal (bogey) competition:— Miss D. Denshire (27) 1 up; Mrs E. G. Denham (18) all square; Mrs, D. Friedlander (34) 3 down.
Miniature Rifles.—The Ashburton Miniature Rifle; Club held a practice shoot on their range last eveniing. A few of the best escores were: A. Clarke 67, W. Bradshaw 63, J. Grant 63, G. Smith 62, J. Mcßride 61, C. Simpson 60. Court at Methven.—There has been an agitation at Methven for some time past to have a Stipendiary Magistrate presiding at the local Police Court at regular intervals. Apparently* this has borne fruit, for Mr T. A. B. Bailey, of Christchurch, will in future visit Methven once a month. ’
