FAST STEAMING.
LINER QUEEN MARY’S RECORD.
’PLANE FATALITY ON ARRIVAL.
United Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, July 27.
The Queen Mary reached Ambrose light from Cherbourg at 12.15 a.m. on Monday, breaking th Normandie’s record, by unofficial calculation, by more than two hours. A large sealplane flying out to greet the Queen Mary crashed in the sea. five miles off Nantucket lightship, resulting in the death of one of the occupants; The remaining nine were saved by the steamship Exermont, which sent details of the accident by radio. Several of those saved were seriously injured, according to the report rfom the Exermont, which also reported that the Queen Mary was rushing medical supplies for the injured. It appeared earlier that the Queen Mary might set an Atlantic record by arriving in New York early last evening. Whether the accident {prevented this is not known. ‘
A later message from the liner states that the seaplane was circling over the Queen Mary when it crashed. The liner sent a. radio message to the Exermont, :Which has just passed, to pick up “the occupants. The Queen Mary proceeded but- the ship’s physicians sent; directions» 'by radio for the care of the wounded. , '
’i It‘ now appears likely; that the Queen Mary has established a: record. The course followed by the Queen Mary, however, Was somewhat shorter than the Normandie’s, and the average speed was below the French liner’s. The Bri—tish ship covered 3096 miles from the Cherbourg breakwater in 4 days 9 hours 55 minutes, at an average speed of 29|28 knots. The Normandie covered 3192 miles in 4 days 11 hours" 42 minutes, 'at an average speed of. 29.64 "knots. ' '
The Queen Mary will not dock until the morning, and therefore no official claims for a new record fllave yet been advanced.
