FIFTY YEARS SYNE.

(From the “Guardian,” July 20, 1886.)

School Football.—A football match was played on the Borough School ground on Saturday between the Hampstead and Tinwald Schools, resulting in a win for the; former by five points to four. Tries were scored by A. Jamieson and D. T. Todd. For the winners A. Painter, Fawcett and Lamb did good service, and Clark, Williams and Armstrong played well for the losers. ‘ . The Debating Society.—The usual meeting of the Debating Society will he held to-morrow night. Should the subject put down for debate be disposed of early in the evening, subjects for extempore speaking wall be selected from the president’s portfolio. Report on Hospital.—ln his official report on the Ashburton, Hospital, Dr. Graham states:—“A considerable portion of the ceiling has fallen, and the dampness of one of the walls is lamentable. Repairs are needed elsewhere, and the w r ards and corridors, as well as the warder’s and matron’s rooms, have never yet been pailxted or distempered since their erection. The committee have lacked funds for this purpose, and hope to receive a Government subsidy from last year’s vote, when they will again take the matter in hand.”

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” July 20, 1911.) Ploughinig Matches.—Speaking at a meeting of the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday afternoon, Mr Thomas Taylor, who was practically the instigator of competitions being resuscitated in this County, said that it was an indisputable fact that the competitions had induced farm workers in every part of the County to take a deeper interest in their work. Next in importance to ploughing was drilling, and Mr Taylor expressed the hope that a corn drilling match should be carried out under the auspices of the Association at no far distant date.

Skating in the Domain.—'Fully 100 persons indulged in skating on the Domain lakelets this morning. A large number of enthusiasts also ventured on to the ice last evening. Mr F. Wilding and several other visitors from Christchurch were among the skaters.

Grandstand at Showgrounds:—The Ashburton A. and! P. Association has at last taken definite steps to erect a grandstand- at the Showgrounds. At Tuesday’s meeting of the general committee, concrete proposals were submitted by the special committee set up for the purpose.
