OBITUARY.

MR JAMES ELLIOTT.

After a long period of association with the Ashburton County, Mr James Elliott, of 18 McLean Street, died last week, aged 81. He was born in County Antrim, Ireland, in 1855, and after arriving in New Zealand in 187*5 by the sailing ship Rakaia, resided in Ashburton for 60 years. Mr Elliott entered business as a merchant in West Street, retiring 3U years ago. He married Louisa, daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph Leggett, of Ashburton, in 1882. . A well-known and respected citizen, Mr Elliott took a keen interest in friendly societies, and was a member of Masonic, Oddfellows’, and, Orange Lodges. He was P.M. of the lastnamed Lodge 51 years ago. His interest extended to local body affairs, and for a time he was a member of the Hampstead down Board. Four sons (Messrs J. E. and D. A. Elliott, of Ashburton, and Messrs It. A. and S J. Elliott, of Christchurch), two daughters (Mrs It. It. Cox, of Timaru, and Mrs A. J. Campbell, of Dunedin) and his widow survive Mr Elliott. The eldest son of the family died 22 vears ago. There was a large attendance at the funeral at the Ashburton Cemetery. The service was conducted by the Rev. R. S. Watson, and the bearers were Mr Elliott’s four sons and two grandsons.
