CHURCHES PROTEST.
DE-CH RISTIANISING THE NATION NAZI POLICY IN GERMANY. (United Press Association-—Copyright.) BERLIN, July 17. Leaders of the German Evangelical Church have forwarded a memorandum to the Government protesting against the “de-Christianising” of the nation and tlio edification of Herr Hitler, and appealing for a cessation of State interference in Church affairs. “Honour is being accorded to Herr Hitler which is due oidy to God,” says the memorandum. “His judgment is used as the basis of all decisions, political, moral and legal, and he himself is haloed with the religious authority of a national priest, and is even made an intermediary between God and the nation.”
The memorandum concludes by asking for freedom for the nation, “so that our people may walk in God and our grandchildren may not curse their forefathers, who built a state on earth, hut closed to them the gates of God’s kingdom.”
The church leaders, in a 4000-word memorandum also protest against the continued existence of concentration camps, secret State police, and the alleged falsification of the votes at the last election, when, it says, “the needs of the nation were put above the demands of truth.” It also protests against anti-Semitism. It is the most outspoken utterance yet delivered by the church. A reply is demanded by August 1.
