SYDNEY CUP ERROR. A strange coincidence led to an error being made in the calculation of the dividend on Contact, winner of the Sydney Cup recently. Two working separately made an identical error, their calculations making the return 4s less than the right dividend. The error was not discovered until some time later, when the ordinary process of balancing was proceeded with, by which, time all d.ividents on the race had been paid. Mr L. L. Raymond, who is in charge of the totalisator staffs at Randwick, said that as it was impossible to establish tho identity of purchasers of tickets on Contact, the only course available to his company, Automatic Totalisators, Ltd., was to pay the amount of the difference—a little more than £2oo—to the revenue of the State. In the experience of the company in the last 18 years there had only been one other case of error.

BITTEN BY A SPIDER. A bite from a spider neai'ly brought to an end the career of the promising three-year-old, Loud Applause' who finished just behind the placed horses in the Sydney Cup recently. Following his great finishing effort in the Cup, Loud Applause was to have been sent to Adelaide for the King's Cup race next month, but the morning after the Randwick race a swelling appeared on one of his legs. This travelled quickly up into his body, and the colt developed a very high temperature His trainer (G. Price) immediately sought veterinary advice, and the surgeon stated that he considered the trouble to be the result of a bite from a venomous spider. For two days Loud Applause did not respond to treatment and there appeared little chance that his life could be saved. Over the weekend,, however, lie made great improvement, and a few days later was well on the road to complete recovery. The trouble sapped his strength to such an extent thlit there is now no possibility of his being able to fulfil his King’s Cup engagement, and he will be turned out for a long spell.
