EASTER MONDAY MEETINGS. ASHBURTON SUCCESSES. Several Ashburton competititors were successful at sports meetings in Canterbury yesterday. At the Temuka Amateur Athletic Club’s meeting, L. A. Watson (30yds) was third in the mile. F. Mehrtens (scr) was second in the high jump. At the Sefton sports, W. T. Weir was second in the two-mile Canterbuiy cycling championship.. W- M. Minogue won the first heat of the half-mile handicap and first in the second heat of the one mile cycle handicap. A Tern? pieman was third in the final of the underhand chop. G. M. Robertson won the marches in the piping events at the Waikari meeting. THE UNIVERSITY TOURNAMENT. BOOT’S GOOD HALF-MILE. WELLINGTON, April 13. Canterbury University College lias a commanding lead in the competition for the New Zealand inter-university college tournament shield. The positions at the completion of the second day’s events are: — Canterbury 261 Otago Auckland Victoria 7 All sections, with the exception of tennis, have been completed, and Canterbury’s lead is secure. V. P. Boot (Canterbury) won the 880 yards in Imin 54 4-ssec. MCCANN WINS STAWELL GIFT.

MELBOURNE. April 13. The final of the Stawell Gift, which is the world’s richest foot race, was to-day won by R. C. McCann, of Gastlemain, in the presence of 20,000 spectators. One of the first to congratulate him was Austin Robertson, who was narrowly beaten in the semi-final. McCann, who is a clerk, aged 22, is a versatile athlete.
