NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. W. H. MASEFIELD WINS TITLE. WELLINGTON, March 11. The Ballinger rifle champion belt, gold medal and gold shield -of the National Rifle Association and Iving'"s Prize of £3O was won by W. IT. Masefield of the Blenheim Rifle Club, at the National rifle meeting at Trentham this afternoon. He increased his overnight lead of two points in the King’s Fifty to win the championship hv six points with a score of 469 out'of a possible 500. Two men tied in the final for second place, and as a result of the subsequent shoot-off D. E. Wilton (Whangarei) was runner-up for the championship and P. R. C'atley, of Ohau, third. By winning the championship Masefield has equalled the record of Arthur Ballinger (Wellington) and, D. Roots (Patea), who have each won the belt three times. Ballinger, who was an interested spectator at to-day’s final, won the belt outright in 1907, and then presented it to the association for competition. Roots was a competitor at the meeting.
