AVOIDING DAMAGE

EROSION AT TRAFFIC BRIDGE. MORE OUTLET NECESSARY. BOARD TO BE APPROACHED. An inspection was made by members of the Ashburton County Council yesterday of the river bed above the bridge to investigate the causes of damage by floods. It was seen that clumps of willows were throwing the water on to the Tinwald side of the river. The County Engineer (Air H. A. Vezev) will make inquiries about the control of the land where the willows are growing with the object of having them removed. An inspection was also made of the approach to the bridge and the railway line where erosion took place during the recent flood. Councillors were emphatic that ample space should he provided under the approach for the escape of flood water. It was decided to take up the matter immediately with the Alain Highways Board, and to press for authority to proceed with providing the culvert provided.. The opinion was expressed that the removal of obstructions and willows, and the provision of space under the bridge, would prevent a repetition of the erosion which was experienced two weeks ago.
