VESSEL IDLE

A DISPUTE AT LYTTELTON. MEN DEMAND PAYMENT. FOR OVERTOIL NOT WORKED. (Per Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The Holm Shipping Company’s motor ship, Holmglen, lay idle at Lyttelton this morning as a result of a dispute in respect to overtime. The vessel arrived from Timaru yesterday morning to load for AVellington, New Plymouth, and AVaikato. The necessary number of watersiders were engaged and worked until 5 p.m. The employers decided that no overtime should bo worked last night, as there was no;advantage to be gained by dispatching the vessel north last night. In accordance with the waterside workers agreement they held that the employers have the right to decide whether overtime shall be worked or not. In the present case, it is stated, the men considered they should have some say, as there was cargo lying on the wharf. The outcome this morning was that the men who were working the ship yesterday would not turn out unless they were paid for two hours overtime. This the employers would not agree to.
