NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. ONE RECORD LOWERED. DUNEDIN, Feb. 17. The New Zealand national swimming championships were continued tnis evening when further finals were decided. The outstanding performance was that of P. E. Mathieson (Otago) who won the 150 yards backstroke in the record time of lmin. 42 2~ssec, lowering the previous best time by three seconds. L. Newell (Canterbury) put up a brilliant performance to win the half mile, and D. H. Symes (Canterbury) won the 220 yards.. Miss M. Leydon (Auckland) retained the 440 yards women’s title, and Miss N. Basstian (Southland) won the 100 yards women’s backstroke. Otago is leading for the Yaldhurst Shield with 33 points, other scores being Auckland 26, Canterbury 15, Southland 10, Wanganui 5. The championship finals resulted:— 100 Yards Women’s Backstroke — Miss N. Basstian (Southland) 1, Miss N. Barton (Auckland) 2, Miss M. Leydon (Auckland) 3. Won by a yard.
