MURDER CHARGE.
DEATH OF MUSICIAN’S WIFE. LENGTHY TRIAL EXPECTED. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, February 7. The trial of Eric Mareo, musician, of Auckland, on the charge of murder, will commence at the Supreme Court, Auckland, on Monday February 17. . In October last Mareo, after a hearing at the Police Court lasting four ' days, was committed to stand his trial on the charge that on Alonduj, April 15, 1935, he did murder liis wife, Thelma Clarice Mareo, aged 29, by administering the cling veronal. To enable the preparation of the defence, the trial was not proceeded with at the final criminal session last November, being stood over for the session which commenced this morning. It is anticipated that, about forty witnesses will be called by the Crown and that the hearing will last two weeks. As in previous murder trials which have extended over a day, special provision will' be made for the accommodation of the jury for the duration of the trial. Owing to the absence in England of the Crown Prosecutor, Air V. It. Aleredith, who is the manager of the All Black Rugby team, now homeward bound, Air ,A. H. Johnson, K.C., of Auckland, has been engaged to pre- . sent the case for the Crown. He will be assisted by Air V. N. Hubble. For the defence, Air H. F. O’Leary, K.C., of Wellington, has been retained, and he will bo assisted by Air I>. C. Aekins and Air T. Henry, both of Auckland.
